Depots & Towers

I took the following (18) photos with a Kodak Insta-matic camera about 1977 - 1979. I was 13-14 years old at the time. I did my best with what I had! All are in Ohio, unless noted, most are gone.

DEPOTS

Here are two DT&I standard depots, showing both freight door variations. The Quincy depot survived until about 2006, after being moved off sight. The Thackery depot was gone shortly after I took this photo.

Left is another DT&I depot at St Johns, still in use and NKP depot at Celina, on Lake St Marys, now gone.

Left is Kingsland, IN on the Erie Lackawanna and Oak Hill on the B&O in southern Ohio

Left is Lima on the B&O /NKP and Dunkirk part of the newly formed Conrail

Left is Wapakoneta on the B&O, still in use by CSX, the right shows what's left of Oxford's depot

Left is Lima's Amtrak depot on the PRR mainline and right is Fostoria's C&O Passenger depot, a Hocking Valley standard design.

Delaware's Passenger and freight depots, note the similarities between the Fostoria depot. Typical Hocking Valley features.

Left is Marion's C&O freight depot, very similar to Delaware. Right is the ex-PRR freight house in Piqua.

Here both depots of the C&O in Upper Sandusky. The crossing is the ex-PRR mainline.

TOWERS

Here is the way Lima's 'NS Tower' looked just prior to closing and the way it looked before the Conrail paint. From what I know, the smaller windows were added at some point, and the entire building was covered in wooded shingles, like the lower portion.

Mike Burgett and myself (that's Mike in the tower), discovered Haley Tower one night, while on a Hi -Rail Excursion in southern Indiana. If you love towers, then you got to see this one. It's been moved just off of original site and is restored and protected. It is in Terra Haute, In. where the  CSX Evansville mainline, crosses the Ex-Conrail Indianapolis Line. Lot's of Trains!

Left is Dunkirk, protecting the Conrail's Toledo Branch and Mainline. Right is Upper Sandusky, protecting Chessie System's Columbus - Toledo mainline and Conrail's mainline

Left is Kingsland, IN. The driveway on the left is the ex-PRR (GR&I), completely gone in this photo. What a difference about 30years makes, today, the driveway is the roadbed for NS's New Castle District which is fully CTC'd and sees about 24 trains a day. Right is Marion's 'AC' Tower before moving and restoration. Thank goodness AC was saved! I think of Benny Graf, an old NYC operator, every time I see this tower.

Left, is the little known Erie Junction cabin that sat in south Lima, it was burnt about 2000. It protected the Erie, NKP and B&O mainlines, near the Lima Locomotive Works. Right, hardly needing any explanation is Fostoria's 'F' Tower still in use today. It was originally called 'FS', but with the formation of Chessie System, there was already and 'FS' in town, so the 'S' was chiseled off the building.   DO NOT ATTEMPT A VISIT, unless you work for the CSX.

Left, is Leipsic Junction, protecting the ex-NKP Ft Wayne Div. and ex-B&O Toledo Sub. Later, called 'XN' after the DT&I started to operate via trackage agreement on B&O's Toledo Sub in the early 60's. The original 'XN' was where the DT&I crossed the B&O south of town on the way to Lima. Right, is Deshler. The blue Ford Escort belonged to Don Volk, 1st trick dispatcher, one the nicest RR employees I ever knew.

Left is Delphos, protecting the ex-PRR mainline and ex NKP Cloverleaf District and right is 'Morgan' tower in Quincy, where the DT&I crossed the ex-NYC Indy  Division.

'BE', Berea, now closed but still standing, protected the junctions of NYC's Water Level Route and Indy Division.
