Anna, Ohio 2005


This is what happens when a couple is broken by poor train handling. Slack is extremely powerful! The coupler head broke off, rolled under the car and derailed it at 50MPH! The couple ended up about 50 yards out in the field to the left. I'm sure the tapes were pulled and the crew got a drug test!


Slater, Ohio 1980 (approx.)

The DT&I derailment photos below were taken by a friend of mine at the remote location of Slater Jct., Ohio, between St Johns and Jackson Center. Whatever the derailment didn't destroy, the subsequent fire did. The small bridge was from the PC St Marys Branch which had been torn out since about 1975. The train was a mix of everything from farm machinery to Ford trucks. I believe the two cabooses were in transit as two trains were combined in Cincinnati, a common practice. Soft roadbed caused a minor sink hole which affected the track and caused the wreck. Slater Jct. was to be a key east / west junction in early DT&I history, but those grand plans never made it off the drawing board.




Wapakoneta, Ohio 1949

What do you do when a B&O 'Big 6' (2-10-2) rolls through a switch and upsets in someone's backyard? Call in the steam cranes of coarse! This set of photos was taken by a young girl living in the area at the time with her Brownie camera. I purchased the photos a couple of months ago and decided to post them on my sight. I have another picture that shows an NKP crane on the north end and the B&O crane on the south end.



Wapakoneta, Ohio 1984

On a rainy morning in July of 1984, this pile up at the north end of AK Siding in Wapakoneta occurred as a result of a burnt off axle end about 5 miles south of town. Automobiles waiting at crossings south of town were pelted by ballast  as the train was drug along the tracks. The truck side frame dropped down on the rail and slid along, keeping the train from derailing, until it got to the first facing point switch. That's where all hell broke loose! Had the ground not been so saturated with rain, there would have been fatalities as the cars would have went through several houses. The pole line was damaged and the CP Box was completely destroyed.




Wapakoneta, Ohio 1973

This was the coldest day I can remember, it must have been 20 below zero! It was caused by a broken rail just north of the diamond at AK Tower in Wapakoneta, where the Chessie System's Toledo Subdivision crossed the PC St Marys Branch. The train was a northbound. The Equity dairy stand was completely destroyed by covered hoppers. The Auglaize Lumber CO. was damaged as well. My cousin Kevin took these photos.



Dunkirk, Ohio 1940

This is what happened when an opposing PRR freight train blew the fireman's side cylinder head  off onto the track of an approaching passenger train at about 60 MPH. The official ICC report states that the cylinder head blew off as the result of a key holding the piston to the piston shaft fell out, causing the piston to strike the head, blowing it off the engine. The freight crew, unaware that the cylinder head was lying on the adjacent track, was not able to stop the imminent disaster that was about to happen. In all, several people died and the tower at Dunkirk was destroyed. The smoking pile, two photos below, is whats left of the tower. The passenger engine actually ended up facing the opposite direction, turning 180 degrees, killing the crew.


Cridersville, Ohio 2006

Southbound Rack Train derails at 55MPH! There were nearly 200 automobiles and 18 autoracks destroyed! The line was closed for about 12 hours.

Alliance, Ohio 1979

These five photos were taken by my friend, Mike Woodburn, from the area. The top left photo is only a few hours after the derailment was reported. The crew fell a sleep and went through a slow speed crossover at over 50MPH. The tower man, knowing the train was coming, heard no horns as the train came through town, he knew something was wrong and he abandoned the tower just prior to the derailment! I believe there were at least four Conrail units involved, all ended up on there
